Good Habits to Maintain Your Eye Health

Updated: May 16

Here's a few quick tips on how you can maintain your eye health as well as your health in general:

1. Hydration

Hydration is key - Drink PLENTY of water throughout the day (coffee, tea, soda do NOT count!!!)

2. Taking OMEGA-3

Omega-3 fatty acids can improve the eye's oil films on the edge of the eyelid aka the meibomian glands. Meibomian glands are tiny glands filled with meibum (aka oil) that line the inside of our lower and upper eyelids. If you have dry eyes, one of the reasons causing your dry eye symptoms is because your glands are not functioning properly. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is one of the leading causes of dry eye disease. Making sure your glands are not clogged and secreting enough and quality oil to the surface of your eyes, will decrease the symptoms of your dry eyes. Your glands secrete oil to coat the surface of your eyes in order for your tears to not evaporate or dry out as quickly. Here's what healthy meibomian glands look like:

3. Using the Right Makeup

Using clean, opthalmologist or optometrist-tested makeup and beauty products can limit irritation and symptoms of dryness. There are a couple makeup brands that we recommend here at eye&I! Using eye makeup by eye doctors are your safest bet since they know what can and cannot be placed around your eyes! 4. Removing Makeup

Makeup removal every night is a MUST! Cleansers with tea-tree oil are effective for removing makeup and managing Demodex. Do not get lazy about removing your makeup every night because this is ESSENTIAL for your eye health! Removing all makeup and debris daily also benefits your skin!

5. Using a Warm Compress

After cleansing, a warm compress allows for any clogged oil glands to secrete healthy oils the following morning. A warm compress is a mask that is heated and then placed over your eyes for about 8-10 minutes. Trust us, this will be the most relaxing 8-10 minutes of your day! We suggest using a warm compress right before you sleep for an even more relaxing experience. Some popular warm compress mask brands include: Bruder Mask or Optase Moist Heat Mask. However, you can also use a clean sock as a mask and then microwave for 20-25 seconds.

6. Limited Screen Time

Limit screen time - phones, computers and digital devices can all lead to fatigued eyes at the end of the day. However, when you are using your devices make sure to blink. Did you know your rate of blinking decreases when looking at screens? Also every time you blink, your eyes secrete oil and tears to keep your eyes from drying out.
